Evidence Based Holding of Children for Clinical Procedures

Welcome to the ‘Evidence-based Holding of Children for Clinical Procedures’ website. This is a joint project created by Andrea Page, Birmingham City University Faculty of Health, Education and Life sciences and Nicola Vanes, Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

How to use this website

This website pictorially demonstrates various ways to hold a child in the event that it is necessary for them to undergo a specific clinical procedure. The procedure may require a child to be held still or to adopt a certain physical posture. This site will demonstrate how you might assist in holding a child in the most appropriate manner for the procedure of medical examination and also help the child through reassurance and support through what may be a stressful event to them.

  • Start by clicking the "Clinical Holds Tool" button on the left
  • In the drop down bar select the clinical procedure most appropriate to the child
  • Select the most appropriate age range for the child
  • Select your language from the right drop down bar
  • View the 3D image depicting the most appropriate way to hold the child for this procedure
  • Click and drag on the image to the left or right to rotate the scene
  • Click and drag up or down on the image to change the visability of the patient
